FLAGS

Know your beach safety flags and signs - what do they mean?

Read all about the many different beach safety flags you may come across on your visit to the seaside.

  • The red flag flying alone signifies danger. Never go in the water when the red flag is flying.
  • Black and white chequered flags are marked out for use by craft (such as windsurfers, kayaks). It is not safe to swim in this area.
  • Red and yellow flags mark the areas of water that are patrolled by lifeguards. This is the safest area to swim.
  • An orange windsock flying at the beach indicates that the wind conditions are especially dangerous - do not take inflatables in the sea when you see this windsock.
