Mudeford History

1959 A Silver Medal was awarded to Mr Kenneth Derham in recognition of his great courage, skill and determination when he put out in an 11-foot rowing boat to rescue two people from a fishing boat breaking up in a heavy sea on 30 March.

1963 An RNLI inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established. A D class lifeboat, D-504, was sent to the station in June and was kept in a small boathouse built at Mudeford Quay.

1981 A new boathouse was built near the entrance to Mudeford Harbour.

The new boathouse was officially opened on 28 June by the RNLI’s Deputy Chairman, Vice-Admiral Sir Peter Compston KCB. The ceremony followed a service of dedication of the lifeboat.

The D class was replaced by a C class lifeboat.

1988 Improved crew facilities were built in the boathouse.

1989 An Atlantic 21 B class lifeboat arrived at the station in the spring. The C class lifeboat was withdrawn in the summer.

1990  The present Atlantic 21 lifeboat, B-583 Ken Derham, was placed on service.

1995 Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum were awarded to Helmsman Ian Parker and Crew Members Stuart Ward and Toby Abbott for a service on 30 October 1994 when they rescued a boy clinging to a rock groyne off Barton cliffs.

2003 The new lifeboat station, built to house the ILB and launching vehicle, and providing new crew facilities, became operational at the end of September.
It was officially opened at a special ceremony of dedication on 25 October.

2006 The new Atlantic 85 lifeboat Mudeford Servant was placed on service on 22 September.
