Flamborough History
Silver Medals were awarded to Captain W Dunn (1839) and to William Parker and John Parker (1853) for rescues to two brigantines wrecked off Flamborough Head.
1871 Two lifeboat stations were established at North Landing and South Landing ‘… and they are so situated that when one is exposed to the wind and sea, the other is always under shelter.'
1890 A slipway over the steepest part of the beach was built at North Landing.
1895 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain R Pockley for saving three crew from the fishing boat Elizabeth.
1909 A crew member on a service on 5 February was Robert Cross. He later became coxswain of the Humber lifeboat and was awarded the George Medal, two Gold Medals, three Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals for Gallantry.
1915 On 6 February the lifeboat capsized and all her 13 crew were washed out. Fortunately they all managed to get back to the lifeboat.
1930 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Coxswain Richard Chadwick for rescuing the crew of the steamer Rosa.
1934 The station's first motor lifeboat arrived. The slipway at North Landing was rebuilt with a turntable added.
1937 A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain G Leng for rescuing 15 men from the Grimsby steam trawler Lord Ernle.
1951 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Mechanic Edward Slaughter for assisting a boy who had fallen from the top of a cliff.
1952 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Assistant Motor Mechanic Robert Leng for the service to a young man who had fallen from cliffs.
1971 A Centenary Vellum was awarded to the station.
A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain George Pockley for rescuing two men and their dog stranded under the cliff at Stapple Nook. Crew Member Alwyn Emmerson was awarded the Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum.
1975 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Crew Member Alwyn Emmerson for rescuing two people cut off by the tide. Coxswain Pockley received a Framed Letter of Thanks.
1987 Framed Letters of Thanks were presented to Second Coxswain/Mechanic L Robson, Assistant Mechanic R Sunley and Mr B James for rescuing a diver from a ledge inside a cove.
1993 An inshore lifeboat station was established on 12 July. A new boathouse was built at South Landing for the station's new B class Atlantic 21lifeboat and tractor.
The all weather lifeboat was withdrawn from the North Landing site on 15 August.
1994 The Atlantic 21 lifeboat was replaced by an Atlantic 75.
1998 A collective Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to Helmsman Simon Robson and Crew Members Nigel Atkinson and James Cross for rescuing two people cut off by the tide at Thornwick Bay.
2007 The new Atlantic 85 lifeboat Elizabeth Jane Palmer was placed on service.
