Our challenge
A new generation of lifeboat stations fit for our courageous volunteer crews
The RNLI maintains over 230 lifeboat stations. At least 35 of them either need significant improvement, repair or total rebuilding. The programme of work involved is huge, and will span many years. But it is vitally necessary if our volunteer crews are to continue saving lives at sea with maximum efficiency.

Many of the places where we need to work present major technical challenges and the need to liaise closely with planning authorities. Some lifeboat stations are in isolated geographical positions – like The Lizard, or St Davids, for instance. Narrow roads and steep cliffs present significant access problems, where building work will always be at the mercy of the weather.
In each case we will also work closely with the local community. Since many of our lifeboat stations are in places of significant natural beauty, we will pay special attention to the needs of the environment. Added to which is the challenge of raising the funds.
